Beauty Review | FIRMA MediSpa

Tucked away in the inconspicuous buildings of Duddell Street, Central is FIRMA, a new facility that follows the trend of medispas emerging around the Asia Pacific.

Medi Spa (n.) - combining advanced and sophisticated medical research based beauty procedures with the appeal of a luxury spa environment.

Dry skin is the number one skin complaint in these pesky winter months, and there's nothing quite like a facial to inject some moisture back into your skin. Speaking of cold weather pet peeves, any motivation that you've mustered up over the summer to hit the gym whittles back down to zero. Good new is, we can still cheat your way to slip into that unforgiving party dress with a little 'body contouring'. So on my first visit to FIRMA, I went with a double-threat pamper package:
  • For the face: HydraFacial a refreshing and effective hydrating facial treatment
  • For the body: Vasershape (a UV ray induced slimming treatment) and the LPG Lipomassage (a 100% natural treatment that uses motorised rollers to eliminate stubborn fat deposits).
(Originally I had only planned to try the Hydrafacial and Lipomassage treatments, but based on the rave reviews of the receptionists regarding their experiences with Vasershape and a sneaky special price offer, there was no harm in adding it to the roster. Perfect for some pre-New Years indulgence)

Ambience

Stepping out of the elevator, I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff at reception, a hot cup of tea at the ready. While the center's neutral beige tones and sleek interior design is certainly reminiscent of a luxury spa, it's maze of corridors, complete with sliding doors that open with the bleep of a key card, added that laboratory-feel. The impression you gather is one of exclusivity.

After spending several minutes discussing my program for the day in a consultation room, I was handed an attractive set of disposable lingerie and a body wrap to change into. The next part of the procedure was true to medical clinic protocol as I stood awkwardly as a therapist shot a series of 'before' photos of my legs. A full rotation of pictures was needed, which they assured me would remain strictly confidential (cue wave of relief). The therapists also took my first set of measurements, which are documented every session to track progress. I mean, minus the unconventionality, it doesn't hurt to have some visual empirical evidence of your transformation. So I did my 360 turn without a second thought as my designated body therapist Da clicked away.

Treatment

In keeping with the whole medispa theme, the treatment room comprised of a massage table surrounded by some sophisticated looking machinery. Albeit slightly intimidating at first, once comfortably positioned on the bed and left in the hands of skilled therapist Da, I was overcome by a wash of total relaxation. Not really knowing what to expect beforehand, I still felt surprised that I experienced no pain whatsoever, despite the heat of the UV rays melting away my stubborn bundles of fat (burn baby burn). I even drifted off into sleep at some point to be woken up by Da notifying me that the treatment was over. Quick and painless, just as it says on the tin.

The LPG Lipomassage was conducted in a seperate room of a similar layout as the first. If I were to describe this particular procedure, I should imagine that it is closest to how it would feel to have a hoover sliding up and down your body. Don't get me wrong though, it wasn't an unpleasant feeling by any means and, as the name suggests, felt like a massage - only with the added benefit of toning up your body that is.

Whilst the LPG machine was busy kneading away, another therapist set to work on my facial. Removing all traces of makeup beforehand, she exfoliated my face with a nozzle-headed device that operated a strange mix of suction and release of refreshing cooling emulsion. The next step was detoxifying the impurities from pores followed by a final step of hydrating and a facial massage to aid absorption. All these steps required the aid of the TMT device, which uses waves to open up the pores in order for the solutions to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Impressively, the FIRMA team managed to fit these three 45 minute treatments down to only 2 and a half hours.

Overall Rating ****
While the therapists did warn me that some clients may feel sore after the LPG, I experienced no effects of this at all. I followed FIRMA's recommendation of drinking plenty of water for the rest of the day and in the morning, and noticed better tone and smoother skin where the body treatments had been concentrated. On top of this, my face felt amazingly refreshed, the kind of clean I couldn't achieve even if I buffed away at it with a Clarisonic twice over.

If you haven't tried out a medi spa yet, I urge you to give it go, and I second the reviews of the FIRMA ladies, Vasershape is certainly worth the hefty price tag.
